What Should You Fix First? Plan, Software or Automation

Most people don't come to us asking for a plan, software or automation. They tell us what keeps happening at work: priorities change midweek, nobody knows where a project stands, or the same information gets typed into three places.

Those problems can feel the same when you're in the middle of them. The fix depends on what's causing them.

Start with the part that keeps breaking

  • Planning: Ask five people what matters most this quarter. If you get five different answers, the team needs to make a few decisions together.
  • Software: Everyone knows the priorities, but the plan, numbers and to-dos are scattered. The problem is keeping the decisions visible while work happens.
  • Automation: The process is clear and the information is available. A person still has to repeat the same steps every time.

You might recognise all three. Pick the one that is causing the most trouble right now.

If the team needs a plan

Get the right people in a room and decide what this year and this quarter are for. Keep it short. Put a name, deadline and next step on each priority. Then bring it into the weekly meetings where those people already work.

A new tool cannot decide your priorities for you. See how our planning session works.

If the plan keeps disappearing

Maybe the decisions were made, but the numbers live in a spreadsheet, the to-dos live in someone's inbox and every meeting starts with a recap. Put those things where the team can see and update them together.

That is where Next 12 software fits. It keeps the plan, meetings, to-dos and numbers in one place.

If people keep doing the same work by hand

Pick one task. Write down its steps, including what happens when something is missing or unusual. Count how often it happens and how long it takes. If the rules are clear and the hours add up, it may be worth automating. Here are examples with prices.

You do not have to buy all three things to get started. Tell us about the week that drove you nuts. We can usually tell where to start from there.
